Design Tips
- Don’t accept every cast-off piece of furniture, fixture, or other item that comes your way!
- When choosing a neutral scheme, balance this out with lots of textures, such as, silk, leather, velvet, grass paper and natural woods.
- Identify your favourite or key piece of furniture that you are going to use in the room - this maybe a small or large scale piece - however, it's important to make sure this is in your scheme.
- Think about the light in the room - is it a light room with plenty of daylight, which aspect does it face? This information will help you decide the most appropriate colour tones to use within the room.
- Plants and books - they always bring life to a room.
- The height of the lampshade should not exceed the height of the body of the lamp. Regarding the shade its total depth should not exceed 1/3 of the overall height of the table lamp. The base of the lampshade should meet the top of the body of the lamp, so that the neck is visible and not the works of the lamp. The base of the lampshade should meet the eye level of the user when sitting.
- When creating a long term interior whatever the budget that you have allowed - say to yourself - will this date? Will I be happy to see this fabric for the next 10 years?
- Don't be tempted to skimp on fabric volume - curtains with little fullness will always be disappointing.
- Your home should reflect you and your lifestyle. Don’t worry what the trends or fashions say word for word - you should be comfortable in your home. Form an eclectic mix that draws on your likes – be bold with your ideas.
- Well designed lighting doesn’t tend to get noticed, it simply does its job! However, when lighting is done poorly, it can ruin an interior.
- A noisy echoing room is tiring to be in - hard floors and bare walls add to this. Introduce texture such as rugs and artwork to absorb the sound and enhance the area as a whole.
- Balance - the distribution of pattern, colour and form - space these elements out evenly in a room and you have a 'balanced' room.
